The image of rosemary is bound to that of the lands of sea where it thrives spontaneously, it perfumes the air and flavors the culinary preparations of the people who inhabit them. The origin of the name itself, which probably comes from the Latin rus maris, sea dew or rosa maris, rose of the sea, evokes its origin.

One of the best and most known aromatics, it is also the basis of the country-flavored recipe prepared by Paola Arianna Appetecchi of ARY’S HOUSE ATELIER for our monthly meeting. I invite you to visit the blog to discover her love recipes!

Among the rosemaries there are several hybrids and varieties which differ in color and flowering, leaf shape, poise and taste, in the garden they combine the culinary usefulness to that of the ornamental shrub but they are suitable for Mediterranean climates or, if elsewhere, they  look for very sunny positions close to walls that can protect them from cold winter winds. However, there are rosemaries suited to withstand the cold down to -15 ° C. as Rosmarinus ‘majorca pink’. A specimen of this species that has been happily living for a few years in my woodland garden, chosen for its strength but also for the beautiful pink color of its bloom that in spring covers it in abundance.

It’s strongly aromatic, in the kitchen it sends out a too decided flavor, its aesthetic value is, therefore, more useful since it may be mixed with Nepeta mussinii, with Potentilla fruticosa’ Abbotswood ‘ by a white flower and in early spring and its flowers are accompanied by those of Allium’ purple sensation ‘, from Tulips’ queen of Night’ and Aquilegia vulgaris.

n these last days I cut the tip of some branches before repairing it for the winter, then I mulched with a thick layer of leaves its base and prepared a sort of hut with wattle.

With the collected vegetal material I prepared some ornamental wreaths.

Brief cultivation notes

Easy to grow plants, rosemaries require sunny places or partial shade and thrive in well-drained soils, poor, stony and chalky, they do not tolerate waterlogging. At the time of the installation, set up the bottom of the dig with stones and gravel.
Like nearly all the plants they should be watered regularly the year of the implantation. Afterwards they will be self-sufficient and their roots will look for the necessary moisture deep.
It is necessary to prune the herbaceous tips of the plant 3-4 inches in early spring in order to have a healthy and well-compact shrub that is not bare at the base, avoiding drastic pruning that might affect the woody part of the plant from which it hardly grows.
In summer, take from the not flowered branches herbaceous portions of about 10 centimeters. Remove the lower leaves and put the portions in a vase with a mixture of peat and sand. The cuttings should be placed in the shade and kept moist for about twenty days , when the first repotting will need to be done. To maintain the necessary humidity you may create a sort of small greenhouse with an overturned large glass jar or a plastic bottle.

  3. Grazie per tutte queste interessantissime notizie
ed anche per le bellissime immagini.

Ne ho un esemplare in giardino,
    quale sia precisamente non so,
    l’ho acquistato come prostrato,
