Before the advent of plastics and rubber, gardeners’ footwear were made of wood, excellent material that isolates from moisture and cold temperatures. Clogs for the Anglo-Saxons, sabots for the French, they were manufactured by skilled specialized craftsmen present where timber was abundant, the most used species were elm, beech and birch or more precious ones such as walnut or those of some fruit trees including apple, pear or cherry.

All this panegyric to tell you that since I bought my first pair of clogs I have not abandoned them any more. Although the first approach was to their aesthetic (I like them a lot!) I then began to appreciate their comfort and most of all I solved with them the problem of my cold feet! When I was a teenager they were fashionable, does anyone remember the legendary Meacci?

Fashion often dusts and renews old glories and so clogs have regained for some years walkways and are now very topical, not only as a must for the summer; matched with respectable socks such as those of Bonne Maison, they become a perfect accessory for the winter season provided, for who’s sensitive to cold like me, the classic models with leather uppers closed at the tip.

zoccoli Ugg Abbie

Ugg

I use them every day even when I visit gardens, I certainly avoid rough paths but I learned to calibrate my steps. My first clogs are signed by Ugg, an Australian brand become famous for leather boots and sheep fur, the Abbie model is very comfortable, with a foot clad in sheep’s wool that even in summer gives comfort and protects the skin of the foot from rubbing against the wood. They fit pretty tight so I took them a size larger than usual. For practialiity and since I did not known where to find them in my province, I bought them on the web. They’re out of production now, but some pairs are still available on ebay.

This year, after having so much admired them in magazines and on Instagram, I eventually bought the famous Swedish Hasbeens clogs, here they are chosen in a very glamorous model. The use in the garden is not recommended, but they reflect my natural style along with the philosophy of the company that produces them since 2006 on the original models of the 70s, they’re produced in ecological leather and high quality timber.

clogs Lotta From Stockholm

Lotta From Stockholm

I then decided to give me the spending spree and did an encore with another company in northern Europe, Lotta From Stockholm, this time with closed tip and comfortable strap on the back. Both models of the two swedish brands wear quite right, but I followed the advise of a new ig acquaintance and ordered my usual size (37, bought here) and put them on with thicker socks in order to make them assume the right form.

The Hasbeens are cured with an elegant line while Lotta are spartan and less expensive, which is greatly appreciated. I confess that for shopping i always wait for sales and now and for a while my feet are well dressed and “shod”!

  1. Ciao
