Siepe morta – dead hedge

By the term hedge, we identify a linear structure composed by plants usually belonging to evergreen species rooted in the soil. The alive hedge is mainly used to demarcate and protect lands or to hide unsightly areas.

siepe morta

Perhaps less well known but equally useful is the dead hedge. It was an ancient system in use in the Middle Ages to create an impenetrable barrier to wild animals. The British were the first ones to start again its use, it is constituted by a bunch of twigs and dry vegetable waste. To create a dead hedge you’ll have to plant in the ground two parallel rows of poles at a distance of 40-50 cm from one another. The spaces have to be filled with leftovers of prunings and twigs, bundles of twigs, barks and other plant material that cannot be used for compost and may be otherwise disposed of indeed.

siepe morta

The dead hedge can be built and grown in length and height over time to gradually harbor material from the cleaning of fruit trees too, ill-adapted to be burned in stoves and fireplaces, and shrubs. Besides having a decorative value the hedge will also protect and shelter small animals.
