my Early Spring Plant Fair 2016

On the first opening day of the Early Spring Plant Fair – 16 to 17 February 2016, an orderly and quiet queue of plants enthusiasts was waiting to cross the doorway of the Lawrence Hall, a Deco large room donated in 2011 to the RHS, and the nearby and smaller Lindley Hall.

This year I was in London for the great appointment of the beginning of the year too, with my camera and an empty bag to be filled, hand luggage on the plane permitting! When I entered it the hall was still half-empty, but it only took a few minutes to get packed with anxious gardeners.

Arnott’, antica selezione (Dumfries 1852) molto resistente a fiore grande e fusto alto circa 25 centimetri.

My interest was particularly focused on the phenomenon related to the trade of Galanthus, the most expensive and precious bulbs do not reach the hall, they are sold at auctions, this year the 1,200 pounds  record was beaten! The most valuable snowdrop exhibited at the fair, was Galanthus plicatus ‘Seraph’, sold at 75 pounds. The Avon Bulbs bench was literally besieged, I’ve never seen anything like it in Italy! I obviously could not resist buying something, and I adjudicate for 12 pounds a jar with 4 bulbs of Galanthus nivalis’ S. Arnott ‘, ancient selection (Dumfries 1852), highly resistant, with a large flower and an about 25 centimeters high stalk.

In addition to snowdrops, a riot of daffodils, bulbous Irises, hellebores and many other bulbs and shrubs that make beautiful the winter garden. Another booth attracted in particular many gardeners, the Pennard plants one selling antique potato selections, an assortment incredible for variety, curiosity and beauty.

Too bad that because of the plane I had to give up many shopping, I also left my heart on some iron structures created by Plant Belles useful to contain the exuberance of some plants and to support others. I mingled with the crowd and almost numb I lost track jumping from one booth to another for admiring all the botanical rarities, many sold with bare root in small plastic packets. I made myself a 50 cents present for a cork with a rose form to be screwed to any half-liter bottle to turn it into watering can. A trinket worthy of our national Mr. TapTrap!

After a few hours, out of the great hall, I crossed the room to continue the visit of the exhibition and admire the garden projects selected to compete at the 2016 Chelsea Flower Show. The visit to the exhibition was also the excuse to meet again two dear Italian friends, Giulio Baistrocchi and Noemi Mercurelli, but I’ve already told you about them here, what I haven’t told you yet is that this year Noemi was selected to participate with a project of hers in the next edition of Hampton Court (I’ll tell you more soon). What a satisfaction, congratulations to this wonderful girl that last Saturday morning has given birth to a beautiful baby boy!

Quei bucaneve poi…
