Never get duped by the color of a flower!!!

vinca major

Ottima idea davvero!!!

So beautiful the color of periwinkle flower, which gave its name to a shade halfway between violet and blue, it’s also one of the favorite of Luisa Beccaria (I like the clothes she realizes very much!!!), I remember a magazine report on her home in Milan where periwinkle touches were present. Without digressing too much, I wanted to tell you about my bad experience with this plant which seems so cute and harmless and is instead a subtle usurper!

Years ago, a friend of mine offered me a piece of that little plant, and all happy and unaware about its evolution I had thought to plant it at the base of my very beloved syrup rose to cover the bare foot of the stem. Ideal location under bushes and trees, sheltered from the sun, as I had been told. Good idea indeed!!!

Too bad I had not gathered information and I planted Vinca major without knowing its so intrusive nature, each spring it casts long creeping stems that touching the ground easily root and quickly cover everything on their path, they are caught in the ground and sprout even one meter away. Perfect for covering escarpments placed in partial shade (in full sun it dries) but really disastrous for any place in the garden where other plants are present.

estirpare pervinca

So as soon as I can I devote a bit of time to eradicate it and in these days that the soil is damp it comes away from the soil that is a pleasure, I throw it into the wheelbarrow and wait for the sun to dry it thoroughly before grinding it, you never know!!!

No inconveniences instead with its close relative Vinca minor, less threatening and equally beautiful it remains compact and has created many hybrids with flowers in the colors more or less prone to blue, lilac or with white or gold variegated leaves.

In conclusione se vi piace la pervinca, mi raccomando fate attenzione a piantare in giardino Vinca minor!

In conclusion if you like the periwinkle, I recommend to make sure to plant in your garden Vinca minor!
