Most of the plants classified as ‘for apartment’ come from the humid areas of the tropical forests, in order to keep them healthy it is necessary to reproduce at home the same conditions of their places of origin.

To improve the humidity, that lacks especially in winter, because of the ignition of the stoves and heaters, Ippolito Pizzetti in one of his many articles written for the column “Pollice Verde” (Green Thumb) (from which a book was published, I recommend it if you don’t have it yet!!!) on the pages of Espresso, he advised: “place the plants in trays of zinc or of whatever you like, and fill them with wet sand so to ensure a continuous evaporation”.

If not sand, the same favorable layer can also be obtained by placing balls of expanded clay in the pot saucers and pouring water up to touch the base of the pot. Finally, remember that plants live well together, when placed in a group the evaporation produced by the soil and foliage of each individual specimens sums up and create a microclimate useful to the wellbeing of the whole group. A further benefit comes from washing, from time to time, with water and a sponge or a soft cloth the plant leaves to remove the dust and facilitate the absorption of moisture.

    ciao marina
