come coltivare la Muehlenbeckia

Sembrano piccoli pois verdi sospesi nell’aria

The round leaves of Muehlenbeckia complexa look like small green polka dots suspended in the air, since the long branches that host them are so slender, the set gives the plant a light appearance, that hides, nevertheless, a very strong spirit.

Just offer it the opportunity and M.complexa is capable of spilling its branches for a few meters or make them crawl to cover lands as it normally happens in its natural habitat, the coasts and shores of New Zealand’s rivers, where it forms vegetal masses so flexuous that you can walk over them. Its coastal origin offers the advantage to be able to successfully grow also in terraces or balconies on the sea, this plant also represent a perfect solution for hanging pots or to be placed in elevated spots.

Most gardening manuals indicate the preference of the plant to the sunny positions or partial shade, but in drier climates full sun is perhaps less tolerated, it’s better anyway to repair it from the winds and to add in its saucer a drainage layer which will prevent rots. Wet when the soil is dry and provide Muehlenbeckia complexa with a bit of slow release fertilizer, a teaspoon every six months will do. Even if it is described as an evergreen plant, easily in winter, with the temperature decreases, it loses a few leaves, cultivate it in areas where the winter temperature doesn’t drop below 10 degrees, it’s better anyway in the most extreme cases, to draw it in more sheltered place.
