giardino vivaio Botanica Santa Marizza

For a long time I have been wanting to visit a garden I already knew as special, one of those who enters your soul, one of those from which you’d never want to leave.

I fantasized about Botanica Santa Marizza since when I saw the pictures posted on the french magazine Côté Sud in an article dating back to at least fifteen years ago, I had read about the nursery specialized in plants for the shade by Ruggero Bosco and his wife Yoshiko and about the recovery of a seventeenth-century family house with adjoining land that became botanical and style lab. Because style in that place abounds, a successful mixture of European and Japanese culture that blend with grace and harmony.

At the time of the article the nursery was participating in the most important gardening exhibitions with a botanical collection that represented a novelty, ivies, hostes, hellebores, ferns and other shade and ancient gardens plants, the same collection now can only be seen in Varmo in the low Friulian countryside not far from Udine.

Last autumn I crossed the threshold of the gate of Botanica Santa Marizza and with the guidance of Yoshiko I went through the various experimentation rooms of the nursery. Perfectly shaped spheres of boxwood mark the entrance, placed to outline an iron gazebo completed with table and odd chairs, are ready in pots of various sizes to suit every customer. We then moved on to the vegetable garden area that shares a rectangle of land with some grasses, amid an inviting sitting area with a stone table and whose natural musk tablecloth was hosting, in that season, the fruits of the above quince tree whose branches give coolness to the delightful corner all summer long.

The visit followed with a grove with arched entry formed by interweaving of the branches of an hornbeam and other areas with small ponds marked on the route by late blooms of some geranium and roses, another specialty of the nursery.

buxus topiary

Approaching the main house there is a large space is dedicated to the art of topiary, again boxwood declined in varieties (balearica, chinensis, pumila, rotundifolia, ‘ Elegantissima ‘, ‘ Rosmarinifolia ‘) lend themselves to games of forms. Just before the gate that divides the more intimate space from the nursery, a rich collection of ancient vases shows itself on an extra large version of étagère.

Beyond the small iron gate, a path of stone slabs, regular but different in size, marks the way up to the house and separates a dense lawn formed by shade short plants placed side by side with definite and refined taste, result of a project that sees the more pronounced jap influence.
