In order to make beautiful decorations you need to have manual skills, a bit of imagination and high quality raw material. Dexterity is a natural gift that can always be developed, if you aren’t endowed with great imagination you can copy instead, provided that you do it right, with regard to raw material you may purchase it or cultivate it. If you opt for the less immediate choice, possibly make sure to buy the plants that you like from serious nurserymen that use farming methods respectful of nature and environment.

If you like garlands look at what you can create with some branches of twisted hazel Corylus avellana, and rose hips of Rosa ‘Zafiro’, which have the particularity to cling to the branches for a long time.

Corylus avellana, the hazel branch is more ductile when old,
before using it soak it in water so it will get softer.

Malus ‘Evereste’ to be pruned for decorations when the fruits are not yet ripe otherwise they’ll fall.

The willow branches can be tied to form larger bundles or twisted to an iron cone-shaped structure to create interesting decorations for the garden.

These photographs were taken just before Christmas in the vivarium I Giardini e le Fronde in Serravalle Scrivia, the atmosphere that enveloped the small nursery establishment was really special but you can find the same magic at any time of the year since all plants are treated with love and bred using natural methods by Stefano, fond of the green since his boyhood and by his wife Lucia, they have the gift of knowing how to transform the fruits of their work in magnificent compositions for the home and for the garden as well. The vivarium specializes in the creation and taking care of the gardens and in the cultivation of shrubs and hardy plants suitable for the difficult climate of the high Monferrato, and then hydrangeas, perennial herbaceus, roses and unusual annuals, I recommend a visit.
Although Christmas is over, in my wish list i put Malus ‘Evereste’, it could keep company to M. ‘Red Sentinel’ in my wood-garden!
